American Art Clay Company - Make Arts and Crafts Sales Easier

Make Arts and Crafts Sales Easier
Being an artist and a business person isn't always easy. As a matter of fact, sometimes it is down right hard. It might be the left brain right brain thing challenge but it also might be what you focus your attention on. As an artist it is easy to be lost in your work and keeping up with the new materials available and finding new inspiration for your work. So, that is where most of your attention goes. Not to mention it takes time to produce your work and that is where your passion lies. Everyone likes to make money but if isn't always easy to put the same passion into how sales and marketing work best for your business. If you don't already, one of the terms you might want to understand is point of sale. No matter where you sell your artwork there is always a point of sale. To make it easy for the customer and for you there are point of sale systems that allow you to track what has been sold and how much it sold for while allowing the customer to use a variety of payment methods.

Life would be simple if you could just slap a sticky dot on your art with the price written on it and the customer pulls out a wad of money and hands it to you. But that isn't reality so you need to look for other more efficient methods of handling your transactions. One of the first things to think about is how to show the potential customer your product and record the transaction. Point of sale displays are just what you might be looking for if you have a storefront operation. If you sell to a gallery, it might be good to understand how the displays work. Since there is such a wide variety available, you might want to ask your particular outlet how theirs works. Often it includes a barcode reader of some type. This would mean that you also need to understand how barcodes work and use them on your artwork. Barcodes can be a tremendous help when it comes to inventory and tracking. This also makes it very easy for the customer and their interaction with the point of sale customer service rep.

If you use the internet for most of your sales, depending on the volume you handle, there are also many different options available to you. Barcodes and barcode readers may be a worhwhile investment if your volume can no longer be handled with pen and paper. Whether you are at a storefront or on the internet, a credit card reader is a must. Just like on the commercials, you can hardly do business without the ability to take credit cards. Take a look at the used equipment available if you're looking at starting out or even upgrading. As people outgrow and upgrade their equipment it is often still very good. Being a good business person or working with one is just as important as being a good artist. Often times, it is more important. There are many mediocre artists making a good living and many great artists struggling. Take the time to understand what happens at the point of sale and how to best utilize the tools available to you.
