IMPORTANT NOTE ON SR-36 SLAB ROLLER: Because the amount of clay and the mechanical pressure that is produced rolling a large slab, the middle of the bed may bow slightly, creating a slab that is thinner on the sides. This variation is more evident when rolling thinner slabs—from 1/2" to 3/8". Its effect on thicker slabs is not quite as evident. This is a great slab roller for large projects, but those looking for thin, consistent slabs, may want to purchase one of our smaller models.

How to Use a brent® Slab Roller
Step 1: Move top roller all the way to the end where top canvas is attached to the bed. Flip the top canvas back over the roller.
Step 2: Add or remove masonite shims until the space between the top canvas shim and the roller is the thickness of the slab you desire. Make sure the top shim is canvas side up so the clay does not stick to it.
Step 3: Place clay firmly up against the roller. Lay the top canvas back over the clay.
Step 4: Straighten top canvas so it lays in the middle of the bed. Turn handle to roll out the clay. Return carriage to original position and peel off top canvas.
Step 5: Remove top shim to transport the clay slab to your work area.
Other Helpful Tips When Using Your Slab Roller
Purchase extra canvas covered shims and top canvas if:
- Using very wet clay
- Rolling slabs continuously
- Changing clay bodies (shims used for red clay, should not be used for white clay later)
The shape of the clay placed on the roller bed will determine the shape of the slab produced. This clay rectangle will produce a slab like the one in the following photo.
Photo of slab of clay produced from the clay rectangle from above photo.
A Clay rectangle with the narrow end against the roller will produce a long, narrow slab.
Reduce the stress on the cables by angling the clay placed on the bed against the roller. Limiting the height of the clay to 2 1/2-3 inches will also reduce the stress on the cables.
Use smaller heavy canvases on slab roller bed.
Using a smaller heavy canvas will allow you to lift the clay slab without removing the shim.
Another way to handle clay slabs on heavy canvas is to place a board under the canvas. Once the slab is rolled, lay newspaper on top of slab, then place a second board the same size on top so the slab is sandwiched between the boards. Take the two boards between your hands and flip them over using enough pressure to keep the slab from moving. Remove the now top board and peel off the canvas. Transport the slab to your work area.
Different textures can be produced onto the slabs by using different canvases, linens, or other cloths. The softer and thinner the material, the more care will be needed to create a surface without wrinkles. Create other textures by pressing flowers, leaves, screens, and other found objects into the clay slab.
