AMACO/Brent Hosts Potters Council Regional Conference in Indianapolis
Indianapolis, IN — September 19, 2008
AMACO/Brent is hosting the Potters Council Regional Conference, ‘Surface, Form and Substance’ in Indianapolis, Indiana from September 19-21. Attendees will explore techniques to create surface enhancing forms in sculptural and functional works of clay. Featured artists include Debra Fritts, Ovidio Gilberga, Susan Kemenyffy, Eva Kwong, Lana Wilson, and Jeffrey Nichols.
AMACO/Brent, makers of quality ceramic pottery kilns, proudly hosts two days of demonstrations and hands-on opportunities. Talented artists will demonstrate innovative techniques. Debra Fritts will demonstrate a handbuilding technique for in ‘The Figures In Clay’. A ceramic artist and teacher from Roswell, Georgia, Fritts will show attendees how to combine modeling, pitching and coiling.
Ovidio Gilberga will examine color in ceramics in ‘The Aesthetics of Color in Ceramics’. Head of the Ceramics Department at University of Texas at San Antonio, Gilberga was featured in the April 2008 ‘Ceramics Monthly’. Gilberga will explore approaches to glazing during ‘Surface and Form: Emphasizing, Altering or Ignoring’. From creativity to color to the ceramic pottery kiln, attendees will consider new techniques.
Susan Kemenyffy, recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship Grant, will host ‘Drawing Is Not Decoration’. Kemeyffy’s work is featured in the Smithsonian Institution and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
Eva Kwong worked at the Nature Lab at the School of Design. During her workshop ‘Sensuous Forms & Evocative Surfaces Using Velvet, Eva Kwong will show how to enhance clay forms with velvet.
Lana Wilson has written a column for ‘Clay Times’ magazine since 1996 and appeared on Discovery Channel about working in clay while making a teapot. During ‘Innovative Soft Slab Teapot’, Lana Wilson will demonstrate construction techniques with textured clay.
Jeffrey Nichols is an artist, educator and exhibitor from Kentucky. In ‘Exploration in Color: Uniting Form and Surface’, Nichols will explore the integration between form and substance. In the ‘Ceramic Arts Daily Newsletter’, Nichols says, “Trying to develop one’s own voice in clay certainly can be a challenge…I finally realized that traditional ceramic processes were getting in the way of my ideas.”
