Ceramic mosaics made from clay slabs, hand-painted ceramic pieces and grout.

Tanya uses new and recycled broken ceramic pieces with slabs of clay in her workshops to create unique and colorful ceramic mosaics.

Materials:

AMACO® Low Fire Clay
AMACO® Velvet Underglazes
AMACO® Electric Kiln
Brent® Slab Roller
Knife or cookie cutter
Hammer
Newspaper
Glue
Grout

Instructions:

1. Roll out two slabs of clay to desired thickness using the Brent® Slab Roller. Set first slab aside. The second slab will be used as base.
2. Cut to desired shape with knife or cookie cutter: square, circle, heart, butterfly, etc.
3. Air-dry both slabs for 5-10 days.
4. Bisque fire both slabs to Cone 04.
5. Hand-paint first slab with AMACO® Velvet Underglazes or other underglaze.
6. Dip glazed slab in clear glaze. Fire to Cone 06.
7. Break glazed slab between newspaper with hammer. You can also recycle broken ceramic pieces from other projects.
8. Glue broken, glazed pieces to second slab.
9. Let glue dry 20-30 minutes then add grout.
10. Clean off excess and enjoy your hand-painted ceramic slab mosaic.
