Lead Free Cone 05-10 “V” Velvet Underglazes for Wet Clay, Greenware and Bisque

Mix and layer hundreds of colors! Velvet Underglazes saturated color, dependability and versatility make them as popular for pros as they are for children. Velvets fire true-to-color as a Cone 05/06 underglaze or fired to Cone 6. Try two finish possibilities: When left unglazed, these colors have the rich, textural appearance of velvet; when covered with AMACO® Clear Transparent Matt or Clear Gloss glaze, they intensify in color.

DIRECTIONS: Shake and stir well before use. For solid coverage apply 3 even coats to wet clay, greenware or bisque. Fire to mature Cone 05-04. Velvets can also be used for shading and detail work. Thin with water if necessary.
This series has been tested and approved as dinnerware safe when fired under LG-10. It must be retested if used under other glazes.

Velvet Underglazes are available in liquid 2 oz., pint, gallons, 2 oz. sets and pint class packs.

Velvet underglazes color chips shown fired at Cone 05 on AMACO® 25-M White Art Clay bisque buttons. One half of each button is shown with LG-10 Clear Transparent Glaze.

Balsa-Foam® & Velvet Printing Class Pack—MSRP $127.00 (43023A)

The Art & Creative Materials Institute AP (Approved Product) seal certifies this product to be safe for use by all ages.

This Balsa-Foam® clay printing class pack provides all the tools and instructions for making at least 48 different 3" x 3" printed designs on clay. Alternatively, the underglaze designs can be printed onto flat pre-fired clay and tiles. Balsa-Foam® carved ‘molds’ are reusable and can also be cut into smaller pieces. All materials in this kit are AP non-toxic. Clay is not included.

Contains: Technique Sheet, 24 Sponge Stippling Tools, 48 Class Pack of Hard Density Balsa-Foam® 3" x 3" x 1/2", 12 assorted clay modeling tools, Velvet Set #4, 1 pint of LG-10 Clear.

Velvet Temperature-Color Variation Chart

Velvet Temperature/Color Variation Chart

For AMACO® Velvets and Designer Velvets when fired at Cones 05, 5 and 10

AMACO® underglazes can be used and fired to the temperature of the clay on which they are used. However, some colors may change, fade away partially, or entirely disappear when used at mid range or high temperatures. The glazed color chips on our selector charts show the colors when they are fired to Cone 05 on an earthenware body.

To assist you with the choice of colors when working in stoneware or porcelain, the linked chart shows how AMACO® Velvet colors will appear when fired to Cone 05, Cone 5 and Cone 10.

Mix Velvets

All colors of Velvet Underglazes were made to be mixed. They fire true to the color in the bottle so you know what the fired color will look like as soon as you remove the cap. What color you mix, is the color you will get when fired.

Notes on mixing Velvet Underglazes: Pigments in the underglaze have different strengths depending on the color and a green pigmented underglaze can quickly overpower a yellow pigmented underglaze. For specific color matching always test. Mixing more than two different underglazes at a time can sometimes result in muddy appearing colors. It is best to stay with two color blends. Many things can effect the way underglazes will appear on a piece, from clay color and application, to variables in firing temperature and speed. Firing test tiles of blends and taking good notes is the surest way to get good, consistent results.
